Power training zones can be broken up into many or few depending on who you talk to and what “kool aid” you are drinking. For this blog, we will be using the 7 zones developed by Dr. Andy Coggan as they are the zones I train with and prescribe to my athletes with great success. […]

Rohan Dennis: Tour de France rider mysteriously withdraws from race
Rohan Dennis’ unexplained withdrawal from the Tour de France midway through the 12th stage has left the cycling world perplexed, with his team director saying he is “confused and disappointed” by the Australian’s decision.
The current world time trial champion, Dennis was among the favorites to win Friday’s stage in Pau, but he walked away from the race on Thursday after stopping at a feed station with 130 kilometers remaining.
Chris Froome’s 6-Hour Surgery A Success
Chris Froome, the four-time Tour de France winner, was in intensive care on Thursday a day after suffering multiple fractures in a high-speed crash in France. Froome’s racing team says he won’t be able to compete in this year’s Tour de France, which begins in July.
The 34-year-old British cyclist underwent surgery Wednesday and the procedure was a success, Team INEOS announced.
“First things first, the surgery was a success,” Team INEOS doctor Richard Usher said. “The operation, which lasted for six hours, went very well.”
Riders destroy Mortirolo Strava leaderboard
Jan Hirt claimed the KOM on the notorious climb from the breakaway. It can’t have come as much of a surprise to Gianni Moscon when he checked his email inbox last night and saw the dreaded ‘Uh oh!’ message lingering. The Italian had set a pretty imperious time in training up the Passo del Mortirolo of 48-40, in a ride that finished with an ascent of the Stelvio Pass as well.
Glutton for punishment much? The 11.4km, average 11 per cent gradient segment of the Mortirolo on Strava has over 14,000 riders’ times on it, but it’s inclusion in the Giro d’Italia this year on stage 16 saw an entirely new top-nine form (with Moscon in 10th), and a new KOM set.

Team Sky released data from Chris Froome’s Giro d’Italia victory that outlines the power of his attack and mid-race diet to lose weight.
The British super team released insider documents to the BBC that show Froome’s diet, watts and thoughts over the three weeks from Jerusalem to Rome. Froome, 33, became the first British rider to win the Italian grand tour. He had crashed twice early on, but rode consistently over three weeks and launched a lethal attack in stage 19, over the Finestre, to take the race lead. Read more from VeloNews.com

Driver in Deadly Tour de Palm Springs Crash Charged With Murder – a post by Bicycling
A driver accused of killing one cyclist and injuring another at this year’s Tour de Palm Springs has been charged with murder.
Ronnie R. Huerta, 21, allegedly plowed into a group of riders after losing control of his car, a Ford sedan, during the February race in Southern California. Witnesses told authorities that Huerta was speeding at more than 100 mph when he veered off the road, striking two cyclists before rolling over.
One of the crash victims, 49-year-old Mark Kristofferson, was pronounced dead at the scene. His girlfriend, fellow cyclist Alyson Lee Akers, 50, was seriously injured and airlifted to a nearby hospital with lacerations to her head.
